My Trip to Commerce

So back in my school days, I went with a really “hip” concept called “Go with the flow”. I never thought about my future or what I’d really like to do. I just tackled every obstacle that my school threw at me.

After graduating from my school I decided to join a college, a commerce college to be exact. The reason? Well because it was the nearest college from my home. (Yea, I know)

The Moment of Realization

After a few years of learning about accounting I realized that I really didn’t like what I’m doing. However, I already applied for B.Com and was at my 2nd year at the time of my realization. I however I did know what I really wanted to do by this time, and that was to be a “Software Engineer”. I immediately took action and decided to join an IT Training Industry named “ApTech” where I was recommended to go for a course named “E-Commerce-Pro”.

But wait, why a “Software Engineer” you ask? Well ever since I was a child there was one piece of tech that I was always fond of and always interacted with, that was my PC. I’ve had a PC since the Windows 95 era. I was really into everything that came with it i.e from its hardware to its software, both integrated and web applications. However growing up, I was mainly interested in the “Software” part of it. Don’t get me wrong, I still love creating “budget builds” and knowing about all the latest hardwares. It’s just that I wasn’t really interested in building them.

The Concept of Ikigai

Ikigai, meaning “the reason for being” is one of the first philosophical concepts that I ever learned about. I discovered the concept abit late in my life as you can probably tell.

The way this concept helped me is by further affirming my decision of becoming a Software Engineer. This is how it went down :-

What you love –  Now let’s go back to my current position. I am at my 2nd year of B.COM and am about to get a degree. Sure I can just take the degree, get a job and start my career from there, but is this something that I love to do? No, it’s not. I’d end up miserable for the rest of my life.

What you’re good at – When it came to accounting, I was definitely not as good as you need to be. However, as mentioned above, I was also attending a programming course alongside my Bachelors and always excelled in every exam in the course. Even if you haven’t tried out the thing you’re passionate about/the thing you love, if you really love to do something, you’ll most likely be real good at it.

What the world needs – I took this point considering what I can provide to this world with my skills and that is the future, innovation, automation etc.

What you can be paid for – Well, after looking at all the professions relating to my passion, the one that fits me is being a “Software Engineer”. Keep in mind that a position exactly might not fit all of your skillsets but it doesn’t stop you from advancing/ upgrading your current skillset aswell.

Journey to Software Engineering

After completing and excelling from my IT Training course, I decided to build my first ever web application that was a forum based on an upcoming game called “CyberPunk” using the tools and languages learnt from my course which was the LAMP Stack alongside other supporting languages and frameworks like Javascript and Bootstrap in order. This was also my first time building a full fledged web application. So why a forum and why “CyberPunk”? Well because the type of web application that I usually visited during that time were forums and CyberPunk was the talk of the show. The end product can be seen below :

This application represented all of my current skillsets at the time and I had a blast creating it. It had all the main features of the forums I visited back then and then some. I even ended up creating a CMS for the web application without me even knowing about the concepts of CMS’s.

After creating my web application I started applying for jobs while showcasing my web application as my portfolio and behold…I finally landed my first job as a “Software Developer”.

My Current Position

So it has been about 3 years since I decided to do what I love and I currently work as a full fledged “Software Engineer”.

I don’t plan on settling here though. Sure, I get to do what I love while working aswell as during my free-time and it is one of the best things one can feel but I plan to keep on learning, innovating and growing just so I can give back to our community while being one of the best.

What I’ve realized during this journey is that things will definitely not always go the way you want them to. You’ll do things that you hate or love during this journey but it’ll all be worth it, as long as it takes you to your destination.
